Metro Atlanta jobless rate drops to 9 percent

Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate has declined to 9 percent in February, state labor officials said. The preliminary unemployment rate is down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 9.1 percent in January, the Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday. More >

Activists are planning to rally at the steps of the Georgia statehouse in memory of the unarmed 17-year-old who was killed by a Florida neighborhood watch captain while returning from a convenience store.

Civil rights groups, students and public officials are planning the rally on Monday on the steps of the Georgia Capitol in memory of Trayvon Martin.

Atlanta fires first teacher in cheating scandal

A panel of educators today voted to fire Parks Middle teacher Damany Lewis for cheating, making him the first Atlanta educator to be terminated as a result of the scandal.

Lewis confessed to cheating four years in a row and to using a razor blade to cut into test booklets and make copies for other teachers. Today, Lewis went before the panel and asked for a lighter punishment. He didn’t deny his confession to special investigators, but highlighted the pressure teachers were under to improve test results. “We were told failure was not an option,” he said.

Jet rolls off taxiway at Atlanta airport

Cranes are moving a jet that rolled off a taxiway and was significantly damaged at the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta. Delta Air Lines spokesman Eric Torbenson says mechanics were testing the engines of the Boeing 737 when there was a problem with the braking system around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says no passengers were aboard. There were two maintenance workers on the plane but no one was hurt.
