Metro Atlanta jobless rate drops to 9 percent

Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate has declined to 9 percent in February, state labor officials said. The preliminary unemployment rate is down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 9.1 percent in January, the Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday. More >

Activists are planning to rally at the steps of the Georgia statehouse in memory of the unarmed 17-year-old who was killed by a Florida neighborhood watch captain while returning from a convenience store.

Civil rights groups, students and public officials are planning the rally on Monday on the steps of the Georgia Capitol in memory of Trayvon Martin.

Atlanta fires first teacher in cheating scandal

A panel of educators today voted to fire Parks Middle teacher Damany Lewis for cheating, making him the first Atlanta educator to be terminated as a result of the scandal.

Lewis confessed to cheating four years in a row and to using a razor blade to cut into test booklets and make copies for other teachers. Today, Lewis went before the panel and asked for a lighter punishment. He didn’t deny his confession to special investigators, but highlighted the pressure teachers were under to improve test results. “We were told failure was not an option,” he said.

14 Occupy Atlanta protesters arrested

Occupy Atlanta protests at five Chase banks led to 14 arrests Monday in the Atlanta area, according to police. In the city of Atlanta, six protesters were arrested at the Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard branch in west Atlanta as locks were being placed on the doors, Sgt. Curtis Davenport with Atlanta police told the AJC.

Eight other protesters were arrested at a branch off Moreland Avenue in DeKalb County, Mekka Parish, DeKalb police spokeswoman, said Monday afternoon.
